Welcome to Main Street Homestead!
We are a small homestead just starting out located 1 block off main street in the downtown area in a small town in South Alabama. In an effort to live a healthier lifestyle, we are starting this homestead - and blog! Since we are just starting out we are here to share all of our experiences- and mistakes - with you along the way.
Living the homestead lifestyle doesn't mean you have to have a massive plot of land to live on, it means you find the best ways to use the space that you have. That is what we aim to show you through this blog. We don't have acreage, we literally live one block off of main street. Our property size spans approximately 1/16 of a city block. We are fortunate enough to own a commercial building (approximately 1000 square feet) next door to our 100+ year old house.
4 Main Focus Areas
There are 4 main focus areas of the blog. Canning, worm farming, chickens, and gardening (as seen in the link photos below). Throughout these 4 main focus areas we will learn not only how to successfully do each of them, but also how to make some money off of each area. We will focus on starting small and building up to substantial impact on our life and lifestyle.
Homesteading Side Hustles
Each of the 4 main areas that we discuss will also have spotlights on side hustle opportunities. While I currently work a full-time job, I do plan to build my way up to earning significant income from my homestead. I am a firm believer in multiple streams of income so I currently I have a few different side hustles not related to homesteading. I sell "blind date with a book" at a couple local businesses as well as some of my crochet items, I dabble in baking, and I have a passive income Etsy shop as well as a crochet blog.
Not everyone has a fortune to invest in things and sometimes we have to start very small. That is the type of thing I want to highlight. For example, I started my worm farm with just $10. And while I haven't made any money from it yet, I do have a one year plan in place where I hope to earn more than $500 by this time next year.
Saving Money
We will discuss various ways to save money such as how to use the seeds from what we grow for next years garden instead of having to spend money on more or how to repurpose items instead of spending money buying new things. Saving money on water by catching rainwater. All types of small changes we can make that can turn into big savings in the long run.
